McKnight: We’ve always known from the countless hours that we spend with kids that doll play is beneficial. What were some of the findings and what surprised you? When Barbie set out to do this research, we could have never imagined the impact of COVID-19 on children, as they are now spending more time at home and socially distanced from their peers, making this study more relevant than ever when children’s social interactions, such as play dates, school or daycares are not readily available.Īziz: I can’t think of a better time to explore how to expand empathy. We’ve seen that some parents don’t value doll play as much as they might value arts and crafts where there is a tangible output and something they can see like a drawing or painting. With dolls’ imaginative play patterns, all they see are toys on the floor before and after playtime, but through this new evidence, we can remind parents that playing with dolls, like Barbie, is beneficial and activates brain regions associated with building empathy.
